On almost every client site I check the same few things: whether pages have a proper title and description, whether text is readable against its background, and whether links shared on social media are tagged so the visits show up in analytics. I turned those checks into three free tools. They are live on the free tools page, with no sign-up and no email address.
The website checker
Enter the address of a page and the website checker fetches it, reads its code and lists what it finds, most important first. It looks at:
- Search basics: page title, meta description, main heading, canonical tag, and whether the page is blocked from indexing.
- Accessibility basics: images without alt text, links and buttons with no name, form fields without labels, skipped heading levels, and zoom being blocked on mobile.
- Technical basics: HTTPS, the mobile viewport tag, social sharing tags and a slow server response.
Each issue comes with a short explanation and a link to the fix, a guide or the service that covers it. It checks one page at a time. I fetch the page to scan it, and I do not save the address or the results.
What an automated scan cannot tell you
A scan reads code. It cannot judge color contrast in context, test keyboard use or a screen reader, or tell you whether your content is any good. A clean result is a good sign, not a certificate, and it does not mean a site meets the ADA, the UK Equality Act or WCAG. My guide to ADA, the Equality Act and WCAG explains what those rules ask for. This is general information, not legal advice.
The color contrast checker
Low contrast between text and its background is one of the most common accessibility problems I find. Enter a text color and a background color in the color contrast checker to see the ratio and whether it passes WCAG 2.2 Level AA and AAA. Level AA asks for at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text and interface components. It runs in your browser, and nothing you enter is sent to me.
The UTM link builder
If you share links on LinkedIn, Facebook, WhatsApp or in email, analytics often lumps those visits together as direct traffic. The UTM link builder adds source, medium and campaign tags to a link so each visit shows where it came from. It lowercases everything and turns spaces into hyphens, so your reports are not split across five spellings of the same source. It also runs in your browser.
Where to start
If you only try one, run your homepage through the website checker and work through the issues from the top. For help choosing what your pages should be about, read how to pick keywords a small business can rank for.
If the list is long and you would rather have it handled, see my SEO services and accessibility and ADA compliance service, or get in touch. The contact form has a field for your website address, so I can look at the right site straight away.
